The Black Thorn Restaurant in Downtown Ottawa is a hidden gem in Ottawa’s historic Byward Market, nicely tucked beside the Memories Cafe and at the end of a beautiful alley in the Market. At first the venue looks quite small but the restaurant extends to a larger room and a gorgeous patio out back. Each part of the restaurant seems uniquely catered to different moods: whether it be for a girl’s night out or for steaks with the guys. The Black Thorn Restaurant, a 19th Century Brick carriage makers workshop; turned sidewalk café is a must see.

The Byward Market area is perfect for meeting a business associate after work to enjoy a cold drink. The Black Thorn and Earl of Sussex are sister restaurants next door to each other and offer a place where everyone from all walks of life are taken care of and treated like friends. Both offer imported beers on tap, or try one of their many signature cocktails and martinis. Looking for a relaxing lunch with friends, then you will want to try the Earl of Sussex pub, one of the area’s best looking pubs in Ottawa. If it’s a gourmet meal, then step into the well-appointed dining room at The Black Thorn.

The Earl of Sussex Pub has an old English-style atmosphere located across from the U.S. Embassy in Downtown Ottawa’s historic Byward Market. Within eyeshot of the National Art Gallery and the Parliament buildings, this quality pub offers a cozy and warm atmosphere inside, with a huge patio to enjoy the hot weather in the summer. The Earl of Sussex attracts a wide range of customers who can enjoy many foods ranging from fish and chips, to delicious appetizers.

We love being located in The Byward Market! The ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. Sometimes called By Ward Market, Byward Market or simply The Market, (Marché By in French). The area includes a district in Lower Town (Ottawa, Ontario) located east of the government & business district, surrounding the market buildings and open-air market on George, York, ByWard and William Streets. Established by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. The market building is open year-round, and open-air stalls are operated in the warmer months offering fresh produce and flowers.
